A few years ago, a friend of mine opened a cafe in Mong Kok. Business was booming, then boom! — a burst pipe in the kitchen! It flooded the entire place, and days of income were just gone like that.

What saved him? The business insurance he almost didn’t get.

That’s the thing about running a business in Hong Kong. Whether it’s a tiny shop or a giant conglomerate, unexpected surprises are part of the deal. Typhoons, accidents, lawsuits – you don’t want to run operations without the right protection.

So, we’ve asked around: from new-gen entrepreneurs to C-level executives, we gathered insider data on the best business insurance providers in the city. If you want to know what we’ve found, just take a peek at our list!

How much does business insurance cost in Hong Kong?

The cost of business insurance in Hong Kong ranges from $3,500 to $15,000 per year. The premium depends on the type of policy, coverage, and any riders that the business opted for.

We value Red Asia for the range of policies they offer, particularly for businesses in retail, consulting, logistics, and more. They even offer products to niche sectors like gyms and personal trainers.

For consulting firms, they offer options like professional indemnity insurance, directors’ and officers’ liability, and business interruption policies. We find these offerings sufficient for those handling sensitive projects and confidential client information.

Policies for retail companies are also strong. We liked that they design packages that combine commercial general liability, product liability, and recall insurance. For businesses specializing in consumer goods, these policies offer great value.

The insurance policies for startups and tech are also solid. Beyond the traditional liability policies, they also offer cyber insurance, which is a unique offering for businesses that want to safeguard against data breaches and cyber attacks.

Just take note that they’re not the most convenient option when it comes to buying policies online or comparing quotes – it may take a while for those. But for solid packages that offer good value for money, they’re a solid choice.

Pros

  • Offers industry-specific policies
  • Tailored solutions
  • Comprehensive policies
  • Offers cyber insurance
  • Responsive to inquiries
  • Offer coverage for niche sectors
  • Inclusive packages that combine multiple protections

Cons

  • No online purchase options
  • Getting quotes can take time

CCW Global impressed us with their solid client approach. In fact, the majority of the clients we interviewed all said that policy details were explained in clear terms. They were also assisted in choosing the best policy based on needs and budget.

We particularly liked their Office Contents Insurance. It provides “all risks” protection against theft, loss, and damage to equipment. We loved that this coverage extends to portable office equipment, which is valuable for businesses on the move.

They also hit the mark with their public liability insurance. Plans cover a wide range of risks, from retail store signage accidents to event-related injuries. For high-traffic activities, these offer businesses peace of mind.

They also stood out with their employees’ compensation insurance, a legal requirement in Hong Kong. The coverage is up to $100 million per claim event, which offers a nice balance of protecting staff and meeting compliance standards.

The only improvements we wish to see are better responses from their agents. They can be difficult to reach at times, even for general inquiries. Fortunately, their website makes it easy to request quotes and compare policies.

Pros

  • Versatile insurance options
  • Well-explained policies
  • Flexible, tailored solutions
  • Offers “all-risks” insurance
  • Coverage extends to portable equipment
  • Event cancellation relief potions
  • Solid employee compensation coverage
  • Offers coverage for high-risk industries
  • Flexible add-ons for global shipping risks

Cons

  • Can be difficult to contact at first

Nothing but excellent

“My experience of working with CCW has been nothing but excellent! As a small business owner I needed insurance that would meet my needs but also my limited budget. Most other insurance brokers attempted to push expensive policy packages onto me. However Gaya at CCW took a genuine interest in my business and its insurance needs. She went the extra mile to understand my business and my requirements to find suitable cover for its activities. She was extremely responsive and helpful in making sure I understood my policy options.  I highly recommend CCW as a great choice for others looking for an insurance partner that strives to meet your needs.”

AXA’s insurance plans are impressive, considering they cover a wide range of risks. This includes business interruption, money loss, and third-party liability. For the average business, these are enough to offer peace of mind.

For very small businesses, their Smart SME Lite plan is a solid solution, offering protection for companies with as few as 1 to 8 employees. Clients we interviewed said this flexibility covered their needs without overstretching their budgets.

Employee Benefits is another area where AXA earned high marks. We liked that their plans include group medical, life, and disability insurance.

Every policy is flexible too, with the options to adjust protections based on budgets and company sizes.

There are also many additional perks that make the experience better. For instance, they have an AXA BetterMe wellness platform where policyholders access mental health consultations and a 20% premium rebate for meeting daily step goals.

However, because AXA is a major insurance provider, you may have trouble finding a broker you can immediately trust with objective advice. Be careful accepting recommendations, especially since more brokers are chasing their commissions.

Pros

  • Wide range of plans
  • Third-party liability coverage included
  • SmartSME Lite plan for very small businesses
  • Flexible employee benefits
  • Option to fit different budgets and company sizes
  • Robust industry reputation
  • Offers a wellness platform
  • Premium rebaits for meeting fitness gals
  • Mobile app for claims and policy management
  • Telemedicine consultations offered

Cons

  • Difficult to find a trustworthy broker
  • Premium is relatively higher than most

Attentive and considerate

“A good place to buy insurance. The service is attentive, considerate and trustworthy.”

Marsh tailors their services to provide solutions for industries under pressure. They have policies for businesses in finance, agriculture, and automotive – plans are backed by both global expertise and local market knowledge.

For retailers, we like that they offer secure coverage for cyber risks, business interruption, and commercial property protection. Clients also loved that they’re guided clearly to the right plans based on common threats to their business.

With over 1,100 specialists globally, they offer in-depth knowledge that integrates traditional and emerging protections. This makes them an ideal choice for banks, fintech startups, and wealth managers that face digital threats and regulatory scrutiny.

In agriculture, Marsh stood out for offering highly specialized products such as crop insurance, farm structure insurance, and livestock coverage. For agricultural clients, this is their shield against unpredictable events like drought and floods.

The only thing we’re missing is the convenience of online platforms that would have made it easier to buy and manage policies. Other than that, we find them a solid choice for business across various industries.

Pros

  • Sector-specific expertise
  • Strong balance of global experience and local knowledge
  • Comprehensive risk management programs
  • Coverage for cyber risks
  • Over 1,100 specialists globally
  • Specialized agricultural courage
  • Strong advisory for manufacturers and OEM suppliers

Cons

  • Lack of reliable online platforms
  • Physical location not accessible

New and high-tech

“New and high tech. Not close to MTR station.”
