The 5 Best Global Insurance Companies in Hong Kong Redefining Protection

Claims Handling: We focused on insurers that actually pay out quickly, not just those with shiny promises.

Coverage: We skipped the one-size-fits-all plans and zeroed in on policies that cover what people actually need, like maternity or critical illness.

Value: We looked for plans that match the price to what people really get. No hidden fees or fine print that leaves you wishing you’d read the whole thing twice.

Local Support: Few things are worse than being bounced from one overseas call center to another. We gave extra credit to insurers with real people in Hong Kong who can actually help when you need it.

If you’ve ever sat through scratchy hold music, only to get a claim form that makes zero sense, you’re not alone. One expat told us the last time they called their insurer, they had to walk the agent through their own policy.

After swapping similar stories with others who’ve had the same runaround, we wanted to see which global insurers in Hong Kong actually come through when it counts.

We talked to expats around Hong Kong, reached out to insurers, and compared policies to find the best ones. Here’s what turned up!

Expat Insurance is for expats who need clear answers fast. What impressed us most was how their advisors took the time to learn about their clients’ needs before suggesting any plans.

One woman reached out about maternity coverage and appreciated that Expat’s team explained exactly what the waiting periods meant and how to avoid any gaps, which saved her from a costly mistake.

We also love how proactive their agents are. Another expectant parent we spoke with shared that Expat Insurance helped them add their newborn to the plan immediately after birth. This helped prevent a lapse in coverage during a critical time.

We like that they have strong relationships with major insurers. This means that they can negotiate better policy terms, so their clients are not stuck with generic, one-size-fits-all coverage.

But the real peace of mind comes from how they handle complex hospital stay claims. Expat’s Insurance support team walks people through the claims process and easily settles everything without drama.

That said, a few people admitted they wished their call availability were better. One guy said he had to wait a day or two for answers to his questions.

Pros

  • Provides clear answers
  • Genuine interest in clients
  • Wide range of insurance policies
  • Proactive agents
  • Strong relationship with major insurers
  • Handles complex hospital claims

Cons

  • Call availability could be better

The team is very efficient and supportive

“I have been using Expat Insurance services for couple of years for home, life, car insurance and i am very happy with them. The team is very efficient and supportive and i know i can count on a quick and detailed reply anytime I have a question.”

Highly recommend.

“Marc and team have helped me with business and personal insurance for almost 10 years now. Marc is extremely knowledgable & always available for advice and support. Highly recommend.”

Blue Cross covers just about everything—travel, health, home, and even your pets. They’re also very helpful to students studying abroad or anyone on a working holiday.

We heard from someone who had a skiing accident while traveling, and Blue Cross sorted out their medical bills fast—no hoops to jump through, no sneaky fees.

Their home insurance is just as practical. After a typhoon damaged an expat’s apartment, Blue Cross handled the claim locally, so there was no need to deal with international call centres.

For medical coverage, we like that Blue Cross offers affordable HIS and medical insurance. People can also easily upgrade to plans that include pre-hospital diagnosis and rehab.

One family told us they were happy with the thorough maternity and child coverage. Another woman appreciated the complete third-party protection for her dogs.

The one thing that some complained about was the customer portal. One couple told us uploading documents for claims can be a hassle, and they had to call more than once to get things sorted.

Pros

  • Full coverage travel insurance
  • Works with pets too
  • Sorts out medical bills fast
  • Practical home insurance
  • Affordable medical insurance

Cons

  • Hard-to-use customer portal

The online enrollment process was incredibly easy

“I was looking for a reliable travel insurance for our family’s annual trip and was very impressed with Blue Cross’s “Travel Smart” plan. The online enrollment process was incredibly easy, and I received an instant SMS confirmation and the full policy via email right away.

The coverage is very comprehensive. The medical and personal accident benefit is high, offering up to HK$1,200,000 in coverage, which gives great peace of mind. It’s also a huge plus that they cover follow-up physiotherapy and Chinese medical treatment for 90 days after returning to Hong Kong. The inclusion of 24-hour worldwide emergency aid is another essential feature for any traveler.Highly recommend Blue Cross for anyone looking for a trustworthy and easy-to-use travel insurance in Hong Kong. The SmartClub discount was a nice bonus too!

Highly recommend their travel insurance

“Lost my ID on a trip. Blue Cross paid for the extra accommodation and the replacement cost, no hassle. Just remember to get a police report right away. Highly recommend their travel insurance .”

AXA Hong Kong has fantastic global coverage and a digital-first service. The “GlobalReach Medical Insurance” plan offers worldwide coverage, making it perfect for anyone who travels often or splits time between countries.

They also have a variety of insurance services to meet different needs.

One policyholder shared that AXA’s “Health Concierge” service guided them through a critical illness diagnosis, helping coordinate specialists and arrange hospital stays, which made a tough time a little easier to manage.

We found their Emma by AXA app genuinely useful. We like that people can check their policy, submit claims, and access support without waiting on hold.

Their wellness programmes and add-ons, like therapy connected to BetterMe, also offer greater flexibility to tailor an insurance plan to anyone’s needs.

The downside? AXA’s plans can be more expensive than others. One expat told us the initial quote was competitive, but after adding desired extras, the price jumped higher than she expected.

Pros

  • Fantastic global coverage
  • Digital-first approach
  • Helpful “Health Concierge”
  • Convenient Emma by AXA app
  • Connected to BetterMe and other apps

Cons

  • Can be expensive

Very quick and efficient.

Extremely professional staffs. Very quick and efficient.

CCW Global has a fiercely independent approach. We like that they don’t play favourites with insurance companies.

We found their advice refreshingly honest. When we asked about top-up medical coverage for various conditions, they laid out the pros and cons across several insurers, even pointing out where a cheaper plan might fall short for our needs.

One corporate client told us that CCW’s team helped them navigate an employee benefits claim involving both local and overseas hospitalisation. They said there was minimal admin hassle on their end—rare for group insurance.

Their follow-up calls are also thorough but not pushy, unlike other global insurance companies in Hong Kong.

We also appreciated how CCW’s advisors handled even the technical details, such as determining whether a particular policy would cover a newborn from day one.

The drawback? Since they work with a variety of insurers, it takes some time to get final confirmation or policy documents for more customized plans.

Pros

  • Independent approach
  • Thorough follow-ups
  • Honest and detailed advice
  • Clear communication

Cons

  • Wait time for final confirmation/policy documents

Helpful and professional

The CCW Global team have always been exemplary, helpful and professional. We have used them for all manner of insurance products and services, both personally and professionally, and would recommend them for anyone looking for transparency and clarity in this process.

My experience of working with CCW has been nothing but excellent!

My experience of working with CCW has been nothing but excellent! As a small business owner I needed insurance that would meet my needs but also my limited budget. Most other insurance brokers attempted to push expensive policy packages onto me. However Gaya at CCW took a genuine interest in my business and its insurance needs. She went the extra mile to understand my business and my requirements to find suitable cover for its activities. She was extremely responsive and helpful in making sure I understood my policy options.  I highly recommend CCW as a great choice for others looking for an insurance partner that strives to meet your needs.

Pacific Prime stands out for its sheer breadth of options and hands-on customer service. They have insurance plans for pretty much everything, from cancer treatments to dental care and hospitalization.

When one of their clients was comparing international health insurance for both individuals and families, their team didn’t just send a brochure.

They helped their client by comparing side-by-side plans and explaining what each covered, down to the fine print.

A family also praised Pacific Prime for flagging a gap in their newborn coverage before it was too late. The advisor gave them clear steps to ensure their baby was insured from day one.

Their claims assistance is also reliable. An expat we talked to said he had an outpatient claim processed within a week, with no surprise paperwork.

The only con? With so many plan options, the initial consultation can feel a bit overwhelming, so clients need to be clear about what they’re after to avoid information overload.

Pros

  • Tons of options
  • Hands-on customer service
  • Easy newborn insurance
  • Reliable claim assistance

Cons

  • Initial consultation can be overwhelming

I couldn’t be more satisfied with the experience

I had the pleasure of working with Max Grob from Pacific Prime, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the experience. Max was incredibly responsive and always available to address my questions and concerns. His expertise and guidance were invaluable in helping me navigate the complexities of international ex-pat health insurance. Max made the entire process smooth and stress-free, ensuring I found the perfect plan that suited my needs. I highly recommend Max Grob for anyone looking for a knowledgeable and dedicated health insurance broker. Thank you, Max, for your outstanding service!

I thoroughly recommend Pacific Prime

I thoroughly recommend Pacific Prime, based on using their services for the last couple of years while living abroad. My broker Sam was professional, friendly, and very customer centered. As was Pearl in admin support. Great communication and very prompt, helpful responses to any inquiries. I’d use them again in a heartbeat.
