Tung Chung is situated on the northwestern side of Lantau Island. Its proximity to Hong Kong International Airport makes it an accessible hub for travelers.

Tung Chung Road is the main thoroughfare in Tung Chung. Its first section links the neighborhood to Wong Nai Uk, while the second portion connects it to Cheung Sha.
Moreover, this road is a crucial route for buses heading to Lantau Island’s southern villages like Tai O, Mui Wo, and Shek Pik.
How to get to Tung Chung?
Closest subway stop: From Central Station, board the Tung Chung MTR Line and get off at Tung Chung Station. The whole trip will take around 30 minutes, so you can relax for a bit.

Start your scenic Tung Chung trip with a ride on the Ngong Ping Cable Car.
This ride only lasts for 25 minutes, but it’s more than enough to take in the picturesque views of the iconic Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and Tung Chung Bay. You’ll also be able to see views of Ngong Ping and North Lantau Country Park.
What’s good about this ride is that you can choose from three cabin types. The Crystal+ is a popular pick, especially for tourists because the whole cabin (including the bottom) is glass. It allows you to appreciate the 360-degree views.

Tian Tian Buddha, also known as the Big Buddha is one of the must-visit attractions when you’re in Tung Chung. Just like its name suggests, this 112 foot Buddha statue is huge. In fact, it’s considered the second-biggest seated Buddha statue on Earth.
To get to the top of the Big Buddha and enjoy the panoramic views of Lantau Peak, you’ll have to climb a set of 288 steps. Exploring this attraction is like a leg day and meditation retreat rolled into one.
This is a nice place to visit if you wish to enjoy the quiet and be surrounded by refreshing mountain air and beautiful scenery.
Visit Tung Chung Fort

Tung Chung Fort was built during the Southern Song Dynasty (1174 to 1189). This historic site was once used as a fort. It housed soldiers that guarded Lantau Island against salt smugglers.
After several decades, Tung Chung Fort was also used as a police station and a school. Now, the fort is one of the national monuments in Hong Kong that history buffs love to visit.
Although some parts of the fort are redeveloped, you can still see old Chinese architecture and cannons from the Qing Dynasty era here.
If you still have the energy for 1-kilometer walk, we suggest you also visit Tung Chung Battery. This former artillery battery is also a famous historic site.
Accomplish the Tung O Ancient Trail

Let’s start by saying that Tung O Ancient Trail isn’t for everyone. This is because it’s a long and challenging trail that stretches from Tung Chung to Tai O.
If the weather is good and you want to take stops for photo ops, the hike can take more or less four hours.
But don’t let that scare you. Tung O Ancient Trail is mostly flat and paved, so the hike is not that strenuous. Plus, there are little shops along the trail that sell snacks and drinks.
The reward of this hike is the breathtaking coastal and mountain scenery in Lantau Island. Along the way, you can also discover several old Chinese settlements.
