We Found the 5 Best Egg Tart Spots in Hong Kong – Officially!
Finding egg tarts in Hong Kong is easy – but finding the best ones? That takes serious dedication – even for a local like me!
There’s an egg tart spot in HK in just about every corner. Some of which are popular among tourists who just want to know what the deal is. Some are staples among locals who just want to have them for dessert.
Whatever your purpose is for searching far and wide in the city, having a guide is just the thing you need. I already have a couple of options here where you can start – and yes, I know they won’t let you down!

Pie & Tart Specialists is the place to go if you want affordable egg tarts that you can score pretty much anywhere. With multiple branches in the city, the place offers egg tarts on the go for anyone craving the treat.
What I liked best about the egg tarts here is that the size is just right – it’s small enough to sample, so you can grab other tarts while you’re there. The crust is thick and flaky too, with filling that balances the buttery profile well.
The taste is savoury, though I can’t say it’s an extraordinary experience. But the flavors are just right, with the perfect amount of sweetness that makes it easy to enjoy for breakfast. Maybe have it with tea or chocolate for the perfect meal.
2. Gold Garden Restaurant

If there’s one thing you need to know about HK cafes, it’s that you can’t go wrong with old-style options. This humble stop in Castle Peak is perfect for scoring those delicious egg tarts without breaking the bank.
The size is just right – substantial enough for a filling bite, but won’t leave you with an overwhelming sweetness. It’s all handmade too, so you’re really the best of details: a flaky tart base matched with the light custard filling.
Pro tip: if you want to buy a few pieces here, consume them while they’re still hot. Though a lot of buyers say it tastes better when cooled down, I personally think warm is the way to go – it goes so well with the milk tea!
3. Sun Wah Restaurant

Address: 330-334 Castle Peak Road, 334 Castle Peak Rd, Cheung Sha Wan
Contact Details: +852 2387 3698
Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 6:00 AM – 10:30 PM
Price: $$
Ask a local for the best egg tarts, and they’ll always name Sun Wah among others. It’s best served piping hot, especially when you get to enjoy it with the restaurant’s own line of milk tea.
It’s slightly more expensive than most options per piece, though – almost twice the price on average. But I think you’re getting your money’s worth, considering the quality of the egg tart: flaky crust with smooth custard that melts in your mouth.
There’s a noticeable aroma of butter as you bite into each piece. The notes of milk are there and spread easily as you chew. Just make sure to come by early, as long queues are expected here as soon as they open.
4. Bakehouse

I’m willing to bet there’s not a single local or tourist who doesn’t know Bakehouse. This famous bakery chain is known for its long lines, often thanks to the delicious egg tarts it has in store.
Their sourdough egg tart is excellent. They’re consistently baked fresh every day, so the crisp of the pastry base really shines through. Match it with the mildly sweet custard, and you have the perfect egg tart for days.
The best thing to get here is to order egg tarts by the boxes, so you can have a few pieces and take some back home. They run out fast (don’t tell me I didn’t warn you), and coming early or pre-ordering is the only way you can take these home!
5. Kam Wah Cafe & Cake Shop

Operating Hours: Monday – Sunday: 6:30 AM – 10:00 PM

The egg tarts at this cafe had that perfect crispy and eggy side that really hits the spot. Though you may find that the custard is on the firmer side, the sweetness and flavors still hit just right.
Just like all the egg tarts I’ve loved, these ones here are flaky too. And when paired with Hong Kong milk tea, you really get the burst in every bite. Though take note that you may go elbow-to-elbow with the diners here, as that is the norm.
There’s a nice hint of evaporated milk in the egg tarts too – it’s not overpowering, so you can easily have it as a finisher to your meal. Order it once you’re almost through your main meal so you can still have it warm.
