ESF Explore’s Lions Football Class is one of the most well-structured youth development programs in Hong Kong. The football classes are part of the larger ESF Sports system, which supports over 4,000 students weekly.

What impressed us was how the class managed to combine skill-building with character development. The school supports well-rounded learning for students of all levels: beginners, aged 5 to 6, and elite academy players, aged 10 to 16.

ESF Explore has done a great job making these programs inclusive. Both students and non-students are welcome to join and build their skills. In general, the classes focus on ball control, teamwork, and tactical awareness.

Another highlight is that they complement their sports program with other offerings. Students can also participate in STEM classes, art workshops, and drama programs. This gives families flexible and enriching after-school options.

If there’s one thing to highlight for improvements, it’s that parents wish there were more investments in learning resources and coaching, rather than tech upgrades. On the good side, these upgrades make learning more convenient.

We found Wu Kai Sha to be a solid choice for families seeking early childhood education grounded in international practices. As an authorized IB World, the school implements Primary Years Programme (PYP) with full commitment.

We liked that the program isn’t rigidly academic but encourages learning through play, exploration, and real-life experiences. Daily schedules are filled with child-centered inquiry, guided learning, and hands-on activities.

We also find it valuable that the curriculum covers key domains, including language, mathematics, and science. Beyond this, there’s also a rounded focus on personal, social, and physical education.

The parents we interviewed also spoke highly of the assessment approach. Rather than traditional testing, the school uses a variety of methods. They mix digital portfolios, shared learning delays, and one-on-one check-ins to communicate progress.

The only drawback is that the IB philosophy may not suit families looking for a more traditional, academically structured kindergarten. Though it may feel unfamiliar, it’s best to collaborate with the school for better adjustments.

Since 2012, ESF Tsing Yi has been following the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), which embraces an inquiry-based approach to learning. It’s an ideal curriculum to support creativity and independence among children.

We liked that language development is a key strength here. The school offers a rich English-speaking environment and supplements it with 2.5 hours of Mandarin Chinese each week. This helps with strengthening communication skills.

The teaching team is a major asset as well. All classes are led by qualified early childhood educators. There’s also a dedicated PYP coordinator who oversees curriculum planning to ensure consistency across learning experiences.

Another commendable aspect is their strong safeguarding and child protection framework. The school strictly follows ESF-wide policies, with Child Protection Officers who can be reached for guidance or action.

The downside, as with other PYP systems, is that it lacks the traditional approach that most parents still look for. But for nurturing and globally oriented-learning, this school is a great start.

Another school that follows the PYP format, ESF International Kindergarten, is an ideal place for early development through play. We liked that the place offers a nurturing and inclusive environment that enriches curiosity and confidence.

We liked that the school takes a strong play-based approach. Children learn through meaningful, structured play in a carefully prepared environment. This supports concept development, problem-solving, and imagination.

Additionally, we find it valuable that teachers encourage independence, critical thinking, and active participation. The parents we interviewed also appreciated the clear communication about their kids’ progress. 

We were especially impressed by their Pre-Kindergarten program for 2-year-olds. It features a 1:5 teacher-student ratio, with only about 12 students per class. There isn’t any screening process either, making it accessible for all. 

It’s important to note, however, that there’s limited availability of slots in both Pre-K and K1 due to demand. It’s best to always be updated with their posts, so you can plan ahead once they start accepting applications.

An overall nice school

“The school opening in Aug 2016 has the biggest space of all other ESF kindergartens in Hong Kong. Class rooms are Big and there are so many activities for kids to do. They have a small library in each class room, and a bigger library at the backside near a loft where kids can play. Overall a very nice school, but pretty expensive.”
