The 5 Spots with the Best Fish and Chips in Hong Kong That’ll Win Over Any Brit!

There aren’t a lot of universally loved comfort foods as a steaming plate of fish & chips. And while Hong Kong is best known for its dim sum, roasts, and noodles, you’ll find a handful of spots here that could rival even the UK’s best joints.

There aren’t a lot of options in the city, but you needn’t worry. As someone who occasionally enjoys a plate or two of this beloved classic, I’m no stranger to these hidden gems. In fact, I’ve been to these places at least 3 times each!

Now, if you don’t trust a local foodie, let’s do a bet – bring a Brit friend over and let them do the judging as well. I’m pretty confident with these choices!

1. Fish & Chick

Address: Kennedy Town, New Praya, 25號Shop 6, G/F

Tasty fish & chips in Hong Kong are hard to come by, but this shop just knows how to deliver. The butter they use is a little thick, with a nice crunch that elevates each bite. Paired with tartar sauce, you have a complete meal!

For fish options, I usually just choose between the local seabass or barramundi. Both are tender and fresh. I also noticed that they’re not too greasy when cooked.

The restaurant is small and feels cramped even in non-busy hours. At least, the wait time is minimal – I’d often only spend 5 minutes before securing a table. It may be better to come as a solo diner too, so you can be seated quickly.

Pro Tip:

Want something else to order? I recommended trying out their fried mushroom! It’s juicy and tasty and matches with pretty much anything, including their salads.

2. The Chippy

Address: Shop G101, Lantau Island, Discovery Bay Rd, Discovery Bay

The fish & chips at The Chippy are one of the closest I can get to the ones I used to enjoy in the UK. With a side of curry sauce, it can easily put any UK restaurant to shame!

Their chips are always perfectly cooked. Inside, the texture of the fish meat is soft, almost fluffy. Outside, the skin is golden with a beautiful level of crunchiness. Seasoning is not over the top, so each bite is not overly salted.

The portion is just right. It’s not bigger than most establishments, but it’s decent if you just want a mid-sized meal. If you want to go for a heartier dining experience, though, you can grab some pies with gravy – they’re also my faves here!

Pro Tip:

Want to enjoy alcohol without the alcohol? Orders their 0% alcohol pale. It’s even good for pregnant diners!

3. The Chinnery

Address: 1/F, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, 5 Connaught Rd Central, Central

Price: $$$

Normally, you won’t go to the Mandarin Oriental just to enjoy fish and chips, but the Chinnery will make it worth it. As with the setting, diners can expect a refined dining experience, which is unlike the gastropub environment in other restos.

Their fish & chips are straightforward. I do want to note that the grease of the pollock hits hard, but it’s nothing that their tasty batter can’t fix. It’s perfectly enjoyed with their handmade tartar sauce too.

To match the classy pub feel, getting a few more options is advised. Any good beer on tap will do, but do consider the roast beef and foie gras as well for a more satisfying meal. Just get prepared with the bill!

Pro Tip:

The place doesn’t have a lot of seating. To secure a table, it’s recommended to come before or after the lunch crowd. It’s best for groups of 4 or fewer.

4. White Beard

Address: 55A Peel St, Central

White Beard is a famed name across the Asia Pacific as one of the best stops for your beloved UK pub fare. The atmosphere alone is great, ideal for those hours when you wind down from your daily grind.

The classic fish & chips are a winner, thanks to their juicy fish fillets and your preferred sauce. It’s beautifully golden, and the portion is just enough to fill a person up for the rest of the day (a glass of beer would also help with that!).

If you prefer eating at home, they have an efficient takeaway system. However, I do find myself not using it much, considering they charge an extra 10% for takeaways. Plus, the experience is just much better when you dine in person.

Pro Tip:

You may not be able to see the location as it’s tucked away among other restos in the area. Here’s how you can find them: look for the moustache sign outside!

5. Fish Bar

Website: https://www.marriott.com/en-us/dining/restaurant-bar/hkgdt-jw-marriott-hotel-hong-kong/5308038-fish-bar.mi

Address: One Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, JW Marriott Hotel

Contact Details: +852 2810 8366

Price: $$

Nothing beats the experience of dining at JW Marriott in the open air. And what’s a better way to enjoy your fish & chips than with great views overlooking the poolside area?

True to their refined nature, their fish & chips are of high quality. The batter is thin, so it’s not too greasy after being cooked deep in oil.

And while I often recommend a nice tartar sauce to complete the meal, I’d advise skipping that for this one. The fish alone is tasty enough!

To make the experience more complete, I’d often order a salad with spinach and quinoa. The taste and texture are very compatible with the chips, and are just nice to enjoy in between bites.

Pro Tip:

Fish Bar’s theme is, well, seafood! If you have the time (and money) to indulge, don’t hold back on ordering other seafood options. I do like their mussels, oysters, clams, and fried squid. Even the crab cake with crab meat is pretty filling.
