The 5 Best Martial Arts Schools in Hong Kong for Beginners, Kids, and Adults

Training Quality: We looked closely at the quality of instruction and the credentials of each school’s trainers.

Class Structure: We evaluated how each school structured its classes and designed its training programs.

Range of Styles: We examined the variety of martial arts disciplines available at each school. We considered both traditional and modern styles.

Class Schedule and Accessibility: We reviewed how flexible and convenient each school’s class schedule was.

Value for Money: We compared membership fees, class packages, and trial options to assess value for money. We looked into whether pricing aligned with training quality.

Finding the right martial arts school isn’t as simple as picking the closest one to your MTR stop. Some places are great for hardcore fighters, while others are clearly built with just kids in mind.

But you don’t have to spend countless hours searching aimlessly for the best. Our team joined trial classes, spoke to instructors, and interviewed students to find the city’s most flexible martial arts schools.

After weeks of feedback and sessions, we narrowed it down to the schools that consistently delivered across age groups and experience levels. Find out which ones are worth the trip here!

Mindful Wing Chun is one of the most comprehensive Kung Fu schools in Hong Kong. Located in Central, the school offers full-time training from teachers with over 50 years of experience.

The quality of teaching stands out as the lessons are deeply rooted in the Wing Chun lineage. They also have a strong focus on mindful movement, body mechanics, and practical self-defense.

We were particularly impressed with the depth of their adult training program. Classes typically run for 60 to 90 minutes. They also target specific areas such as balance, technical drills, sparring, and conditioning.

We also like that they offer a free trial to newcomers.

The kids’ programs were just as great. Beyond martial arts, the curriculum focuses on discipline, respect, and emotional awareness.

For flexibility, private training and online programs both met our standards.

The only downside we noted was limited peak-hour availability due to high demand. This makes popular class slots challenging to join.

Pros

  • Instructors with over 50 years of experience
  • Authentic Wing Chun lineage
  • Full-time, dedicated Kung Fu school
  • Central HK location
  • Wide range of adult and kids programs
  • Free trial class offered
  • Offers private and online programs

Cons

  • Limited peak-hour availability
  • Relatively higher rates for private sessions

Boosts confidence

“My son is thriving at Mindful Wing Chun. The mentorship has not only given him self defence skills through the art of Wing Chun, but also instilled a philosophy of calmness, respect, discipline and mastery of emotions. I’ve seen a boost in his confidence and he’s proud of “levelling up” ☺️ The dojo has a warm, inviting feel and the instructors are kind and positive.”

Incredibly rich experience

“I joined the Wing Chun class expecting just another workout, but it turned out to be an incredibly rich experience! The intensity varies, so whether I need a quick energy boost during my lunch break or a way to unwind after a long day, it fits perfectly. Plus, the location is super convenient—right into the middle of the central. Highly recommend!”

Carpe Diem Jiu Jitsu is our top choice for high-level Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

What’s great is that lessons are flexible and can accommodate both complete beginners and advanced competitors.

Credibility is one of their major advantages. The school is backed by a global network of over 40 academies. This allows their HK branch to benefit from world-class training systems.

We favor the way they structure classes. Daily classes run throughout the week, typically lasting 60 to 90 minutes.

Students particularly highlighted that this approach supports steady progression. The comprehensive schedule also makes it easy for busy professionals.

The coaching team was another standout. All instructors are IBJJF-certified black belts who have completed extensive training.

The facility further reinforced its quality offerings. The gym features over 1,000 square feet of training space. It’s fully air-conditioned, has quality mats, and maintains spotless hygiene standards.

Just take note that peak-time classes can become crowded due to high demand.

SHBJJ is one of the best martial arts schools in Hong Kong for those looking for structured Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We especially liked that they blend martial arts training with exercise, recovery, rest, and nutrition.

We love how well-designed their kids’ program is. Children aged 4 to 7 learn through fun, interactive games. Fundamental BJJ skills are introduced gradually, emphasizing technique and discipline.

We also liked the unlimited kids class options, which are pretty rare among martial arts schools in Hong Kong. This one not only includes BJJ but also Muay Thai, boxing, and even hip-hop dance.

Adult classes are pretty flexible as they run throughout the day. Instruction is led by world-class Brazilian black belt professors.

Knowing this, we’re confident in the quality of teaching under hands-on guidance.

The facilities also left a strong impression on us. They have an expansive mat space, bright interiors, and clean changing rooms.

As with most schools, popular time slots book quickly. It can be difficult to book for newcomers, so booking a class in advance is recommended.

Pros

  • Free trial classes available
  • Holistic DEF wellness philosophy
  • Highly structured training programs
  • Game-based skill development for kids
  • Full daily training schedule
  • Has parent viewing areas
  • High-quality facility

Cons

  • Can be difficult to book for newcomers
  • Popular time slots book quickly

One of the things we liked about Kru Muay Thai was how consistent their lessons were. According to students, the classes follow a clear structure, complete with solid demonstrations.

This one stands out for coaching quality. Their trainers had real fight backgrounds, equipping them with practical knowledge.

Students also appreciate that corrections were immediate, specific, and easy to apply.

The small class sizes also made a difference for students. With roughly 8 students per session, classes never felt crowded, and coaches can easily offer feedback.

Another great thing is that both group and private sessions felt tailored. Even in group classes, adjustments were personal.

We’re pleasantly surprised by how good their facility is. The gym is clear, modern, and well-maintained.

Being centrally located also made squeezing in much easier.

We just find the rates for drop-in classes steep, especially for first-timers. We also heard a bit of an issue with accessibility via phone, though it’s an isolated case.

Pros

  • Authentic Muay Thai coaching
  • Small class sizes
  • Hands-on, tailored instruction
  • Clear and modern facilities
  • Central location
  • Suitable for beginners

Cons

  • Relatively high drop-in prices
  • Occasional communication issues

What we liked about PCMA is their focus on real-world self-defence. The emphasis is on distance, control, and reacting under pressure.

We also appreciate how clearly the programs were tiered. Beginners can easily take advantage of the lessons as they weren’t pushed too fast to progress.

Part of this experience is the quality of coaching. Instructors adjusted explanations based on the skill level of the learner. This makes sessions more accessible.

The place offers both adult and kids’ programs, and we liked both for the tailored approaches. Kids’ classes lean into confidence, discipline, and coordination.

For adults, the sessions focus on realistic scenarios, including ground situations and travel safety.

The wellness side of things also earned our favor. As part of their long-term physical care, they integrate Tai Chi, Qigong, and meditation into their sessions.

That said, we noticed that their operating hours are limited compared to other schools. This may be tricky for busy professionals or full-time workers.

Pros

  • Strong focus on practical self-defense
  • Clear progression paths
  • Adaptable and experienced instructors
  • Emphasis on discipline and character
  • Wellness programs integrated
  • Accessible lessons

Cons

  • Limited operating hours
  • Minimal focus on competition

Kind to the students

“Sifu Patrick is very experienced and kind to the students. The classroom is tidy and clean, and is of very convenient location. One of the best places we’ve been experienced among HK.”
